Yes — if you are already in Thailand on a Tourist Visa or visa exemption and are 50 or over, you can usually convert to a Non-Immigrant O (retirement) without flying out. It needs enough days left on your current stamp, the qualifying funds in a Thai bank account, and the file submitted in the right order at Phuket Immigration. For retirees already on the island, this is normally the cleanest route.
Who this route fits
You are already in Phuket, you are 50+, and you would rather not leave the country to collect a visa from an embassy. The in-country conversion turns your short stay into a Non-O, which you then extend for retirement — all without a flight.
What you need before you start
- Enough validity on your current stamp. The conversion has to be lodged with a minimum number of days remaining — leave it too late and you lose the option.
- Age 50+ on the date of application.
- Thai bank account funded from abroad with the qualifying amount, correctly seasoned (see our Thai bank account guide).
- TM30 on file for where you are staying in Phuket.
- Supporting documents formatted the way the Phuket office expects.
How the conversion actually runs
- Pre-check. We confirm your stamp gives enough runway and your funds timeline works.
- Bank account & funds. Opened and funded internationally, then seasoned on a calendar built backwards from the application.
- Convert to Non-O. The conversion is filed at Phuket Immigration with the financial evidence and TM30.
- Retirement extension. Once on the Non-O, the long-stay retirement extension is applied for, with a fresh bank letter.
- Re-entry permit arranged before any travel so the visa is not cancelled on departure.
Notice: The biggest avoidable failure here is timing: starting the bank seasoning too late for the days left on your stamp. The pre-check exists to catch exactly this before the clock runs out.
Convert in-country vs. apply abroad
Convert in Thailand (Non-O)
No flight needed, done from Phuket, generally lighter home-country paperwork, well suited to retirees already here. Requires careful timing against your current stamp and seasoned Thai funds.
Apply abroad (Non-O-A)
Lodged in your home country before arrival. Heavier documentation including police clearance and health insurance at a set level. Better only in specific cases — we tell you honestly which applies to you.
