Retire in Phuket from the United Kingdom

British retirees moving to Phuket usually choose between a Non-O converted in Thailand or a Non-O-A from the Royal Thai Embassy in London. The right route depends on whether you can supply an ACRO police certificate, how your UK State Pension and any SIPP or annuity income is paid, and your insurance status. Below is what changes for UK nationals.

What is different for UK nationals

  • Police clearance. The Non-O-A needs an ACRO police certificate (Disclosure or Subject Access depending on embassy practice). Standard service typically issues within 10 working days; allow longer with apostille.
  • UK State Pension & SIPP. DWP statements and SIPP/annuity provider letters are widely accepted as income evidence once embassy-certified or notarised + FCDO-legalised.
  • Health insurance. The NHS does not cover treatment in Thailand. The Non-O-A insurance requirement must be met with a Thai or international policy at the prescribed coverage.
  • GBP transfers. Send the qualifying funds as an international transfer from a UK bank in GBP (Wise/Revolut local-wallet transfers to a Thai account often arrive as domestic and fail the foreign-inflow test).

Convert in Thailand vs apply via the London embassy

In-country Non-O (from Phuket)

No ACRO certificate needed for the standard extension. Arrive on a tourist stamp, open the Thai account in Phuket, season funds, convert. Generally faster for UK retirees who can do a scouting trip.

Non-O-A at the Thai embassy in London

Heavier file: ACRO, medical certificate, insurance evidence, legalised pension proof. You arrive already on a long-stay visa.

Realistic UK → Phuket sequence

  1. Free pre-check from Phuket: timeline mapped against ACRO lead time and pension paperwork.
  2. Open the Thai bank account at a Phuket branch used to long-stay accounts.
  3. SWIFT the qualifying funds from a UK bank in GBP — not via a third-party wallet that codes as domestic in Thailand.
  4. Season the balance for the required period.
  5. File at Phuket Immigration with TM30 and fresh bank letter, our team attending.
  6. Re-entry permit before any trip back to the UK so the visa survives departure.

Notice: UK retirees who use Wise/Revolut for the qualifying transfer often see the Thai bank log it as a domestic inflow — wrong source on the letter. Use a SWIFT transfer from your UK bank for the qualifying amount and Wise for spending money only.
