Retire in Phuket from Germany

German retirees moving to Phuket usually have two viable routes: a Non-O converted inside Thailand or a Non-O-A applied for at the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin (or Consulate General in Frankfurt/Munich) before flying out. Which one fits depends on whether you can supply a German Führungszeugnis on time, your health insurance, and how your pension is paid. Below is what changes specifically for German nationals.

What is different for German nationals

  • Police clearance. The Non-O-A requires a recent Führungszeugnis (Belegart "O" or "OE") with apostille from the Bundesverwaltungsamt. Allow 4–6 weeks — it is the single most common reason German files arrive late.
  • Pension proof. Deutsche Rentenversicherung statements or private Riester/Rürup notices are widely accepted as income evidence once embassy-certified or translated and legalised.
  • Health insurance. German statutory cover (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) generally does not satisfy the Non-O-A insurance requirement — a Thai or international policy at the prescribed coverage is needed.
  • EUR transfers. Send the qualifying funds as an international SEPA/SWIFT transfer in EUR (not via a Thai-resident account or domestic payment service) so the Thai bank logs a clean foreign inflow.

Convert in Thailand vs apply via the embassy

In-country Non-O (from Phuket)

No Führungszeugnis needed for the standard extension. You arrive on a tourist stamp, open the Thai account in Phuket, season the funds, then convert. Cleanest for retirees already considering a scouting trip.

Non-O-A at the Thai embassy in Germany

Full embassy file: Führungszeugnis, medical certificate, insurance evidence. Heavier paperwork but you arrive in Thailand already on a long-stay visa.

Realistic Germany → Phuket sequence

  1. Free pre-check from Phuket: we map the timeline against your Führungszeugnis lead time and pension paperwork.
  2. Open the Thai bank account at a Phuket branch that handles long-stay accounts cleanly.
  3. SEPA/SWIFT the qualifying funds from Germany in EUR; the bank codes it as a foreign inflow.
  4. Season the balance for the required period.
  5. File at Phuket Immigration with TM30 and a fresh bank letter, our team attending.
  6. Re-entry permit before any Germany trip so the visa survives departure.

Notice: The single biggest avoidable delay for German files is starting the Führungszeugnis too late. If the Non-O-A route is the right one, that document should be the first thing in motion.
