Australian retirees moving to Phuket usually choose between converting in Thailand to a Non-O or applying via the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra or a Consulate (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth) for a Non-O-A. The right route turns on whether you can obtain an AFP National Police Check on time, how your Age Pension and superannuation are paid, and your insurance position. Below is what changes for Australian nationals.
What is different for Australian nationals
- Police clearance. The Non-O-A typically requires an AFP National Police Check with DFAT apostille. Standard processing is 5–15 business days; allow longer for apostille.
- Income proof. Centrelink Age Pension letters, ATO income statements and superannuation provider letters are widely accepted as income evidence once embassy-certified or notarised + DFAT-legalised.
- Health insurance. Australian Medicare does not cover treatment in Thailand. The Non-O-A insurance level must be met with a Thai or international policy at the prescribed coverage.
- AUD transfers. Send the qualifying funds as an international transfer in AUD via SWIFT from an Australian bank so the Thai bank logs a clean foreign inflow.
- Australian-resident-for-tax status. Becoming a Thai tax resident has implications for super and CGT — speak to an Australian-licensed adviser before transferring large balances.
In-country Non-O (from Phuket)
No AFP check needed for the standard extension. Arrive on a tourist stamp, open Thai account in Phuket, season funds, convert. Often the cleanest path.
Non-O-A at a Thai embassy/consulate in Australia
Heavier file: AFP National Police Check, medical certificate, insurance evidence. You arrive already on a long-stay visa.
Notice: Avoid using third-party transfer apps for the qualifying retirement transfer — they often arrive in Thailand coded as domestic, which fails the foreign-inflow test. Use a SWIFT transfer from your Australian bank for the qualifying amount.
