The Non-Immigrant O-A is a long-stay retirement visa for foreigners aged 50 or older, applied for at a Thai embassy in your home country. It grants a two-year multi-entry permission with one-year stays per entry, but requires qualifying health insurance and stricter documentation than the Non-O route. Yearly extensions are filed in Thailand at Phuket Immigration. Final approval rests with Thai authorities.

What is the Non-OA Retirement Visa?

The Non-Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) is the embassy-issued retirement visa for applicants who want a longer initial validity than the Non-O. It is issued in your home country before you travel to Thailand. The visa runs two years from issue with one-year stays per entry, plus the option of a one-year extension after that.

Who should choose Non-OA?

  • Retirees who want a two-year multi-entry visa from day one, without first going through a Non-O.
  • Applicants comfortable carrying the required Thai-approved health insurance.
  • Applicants from countries where the local Thai embassy still processes Non-OA smoothly.
  • Retirees who travel frequently in the first two years and value built-in multi-entry.

Insurance requirements

Non-OA requires qualifying health insurance at the time of writing — commonly cited as 400,000 THB inpatient and 40,000 THB outpatient coverage from an approved insurer. Thresholds and approved-insurer lists change. Always check the current rule with the embassy you intend to apply through before purchasing a policy.

Application from your home country

The Non-OA is filed at the Thai embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or legal residence. Typical documents include passport, application form, financial evidence (foreign bank statement showing the equivalent of 800,000 THB or income equivalent), police clearance certificate, medical certificate, and proof of qualifying insurance.

Stay length and extension logic

  • Initial Non-OA validity: 2 years multi-entry from issue.
  • Each entry grants up to a 1-year stay.
  • By entering shortly before the 2-year mark and then extending in Thailand, retirees can effectively reach almost 5 years before a fresh application.
  • Yearly extensions are filed at Phuket Immigration, similar to the Non-O extension process.

Non-OA vs Non-O Retirement Visa

The Non-O is usually cheaper and lighter to obtain, especially for retirees already in Thailand or whose embassies dropped income certification. The Non-OA is heavier upfront but offers built-in multi-entry and a longer initial validity. Many retirees who plan permanent residence in Phuket eventually switch to the Non-O extension model regardless of which visa they started with. See the full Non-O vs Non-OA comparison.

Documents

  • Passport with at least 18 months validity at application.
  • Embassy Non-OA application form.
  • Bank statement equivalent to 800,000 THB or certified pension income.
  • Police clearance certificate from country of residence.
  • Medical certificate covering specified illnesses.
  • Proof of qualifying Thai-approved health insurance.
  • Passport-size photographs.

Costs

Embassy fees vary by country; the insurance is the largest recurring cost layer. Once in Thailand, the yearly extension fee is the same 1,900 THB as the Non-O path, plus re-entry permits if applicable. See the full case-specific pre-check.

Phuket extension notes

Non-OA holders extending in Phuket follow the same Immigration office process as Non-O holders, with the added insurance verification at the counter. We confirm the current insurance certificate format Phuket Immigration accepts before the visit.

Notice: Non-OA insurance rules and approved-insurer lists have changed several times. Buy a qualifying policy only after confirming the current rule with your embassy and with us.
