Married couples retiring in Thailand have two main paths: both spouses qualify for their own retirement visa, or one retires and the other comes as a dependent on a marriage-based "O" visa. Which is cheaper and safer depends on both ages and how the finances are held — and the marriage certificate must be properly translated and legalised. We work out the lower-risk structure for your specific case.
Path A — both spouses 50 or over
If both of you are 50+, each can hold an independent retirement extension. This is usually the most robust setup: neither visa depends on the other, so if one file has an issue the other is unaffected. It does mean meeting the financial requirement in a way that covers both — we confirm exactly how the funds should be held so each application stands on its own.
Path B — one spouse 50+, the other younger
The older spouse takes the retirement visa. The younger spouse applies for a dependent Non-O based on the marriage. This keeps you both legal long-term without the younger partner needing to be 50, but the dependent visa lives or dies with the primary visa — if the retiree's extension lapses, so does the spouse's. Timing both renewals together matters.
The marriage certificate is the quiet blocker
The dependent route needs your marriage certificate accepted by Thai immigration — which usually means official translation and legalisation, sometimes via your embassy and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Couples routinely arrive in Phuket with an untranslated certificate and lose weeks. We flag this in the pre-check so it is handled in parallel, not at the counter.
Both on retirement visas
Independent and resilient — one issue does not threaten the other. Requires the financial criteria to be met in a way that covers both applicants. Best when both are 50+.
Retirement + dependent spouse
Works when one spouse is under 50. The dependent visa is tied to the primary retiree's visa and needs a properly legalised marriage certificate. Renewals must be aligned.
Notice: Do not assume the dependent route is automatic. Whether the financial proof must be higher for a couple, and how the marriage document is accepted in Phuket, are exactly the points we confirm before you commit to a path.
